Digitized collections of archeological objects with mythological iconography in the BNF’s Department of Medals
With the digitization of old collections of photographs and a vast campaign of digital filming as its starting point, this project’s goal is the study and valorization – notably under the vantage point of iconography and the historical and geographic journeys of antique objects – of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman works of mythological iconography conserved by the French National Library’s (BnF) Department of Monies, Medals, and Antiques. These data will be distributed on the site LIMC-France and on the Internet site of the BnF.
The newly created collection will be the occasion to reflect on the perception and modes of visualization of the heritage object. Beyond the community of researchers, the project also seeks to reach a vast audience, thanks to the realization of thematic dossiers and virtual exhibitions that will keep collections accessible during the renovations of the Richelieu site of the BnF.
