Scientific Impact and social appropriation of Odysséo, Europe’s first digital catalog dedicated to the history of immigration
This project seeks to understand both the impact of the digital catalog Odysséo on social science scholars and the reception and appropriation of its content by the public, specifically high school students. Its goal, more broadly, is to create assessment tools and to provide a practical orientation to the creators of digital catalogs. Created by the non-profit Génériques in 2009, Odysséo is Europe’s first national portal for digital resources on the history and memory of immigration and foreign immigrants. Since 2013, it also combines digital resources from institutional and organizational partners that have an archival description and/or digital sources. Also in 2013, Odysséo was integrated into the Social History Portal, which feeds into Europeana, the European digital library. Since its conception, this tool promoting the heritage of immigration has posed several key questions: why put online sources on the history and memory of immigration? Which or whose memories and histories does it present? What is the valorization? How does the public appropriate the contents? What is its audience? If the history of immigration is not uniquely written for (and by) immigrants and their descendants, what is the significance of this heritage tool and what cultural, social, and political issues does it raise?
