The invention of Gaul. Material archives and the creation of archeological knowledge and representations of the Gallic past.
This project seeks to study the composition of Gallic archeological collections, from fieldwork to museum, as well as the conditions of their display and dissemination to the both scholars and the general public over the long duration.
“The invention of Gaul” aims to encompass, for the first time, the totality of archives that deals with representing the Gallic past via museums, which constitute a privileged channel. The items include classic “paper” archives and, above all, other “material archives” from digs, collections, and museum display systems from France and abroad.
Paradoxically, these materials remain largely unstudied. An inventory is thus needed first. This approach should inform scholars’ methods and questions as well as the conceptions displayed in this scholarship and its dissemination to the general public. Particular attention will be paid to the reception of this pedagogical discourse, notably in school textbooks.
