Université Paris Nanterre

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2017, on September 16,2017, the Pasts in the Present cluster of excellence proposes 4 urban circuits to discover the history of the university of Nanterre and its surroundings. These itineraries are organized by the cluster of excellence The pasts in the present of the University of Paris West Nanterre la Défense (in partnership with the Nanterre history society, the university’s master’s in urban planning and urbanism, and the Mosaïques laboratory (UMR Lavue).

Urban cirucuit 1 – Welcome to le Petit Nanterre ! Discover an unusual district : history and solidarities.

Petite Nanterre’s school, once coupled with the emerging university, linking it to the neighborhood, where the slums and transitory housing projects, as well as the impressive Maison de Nanterre, where many difficult lives ended. All these municipalities have known profound transformations in the last fifty years that developed anew the neighborhoods and vicinities between the university and Petit Nanterre, and which questions the potential patrimonialization of long obscured memories.

Departure : Campus of the university, in front of the building B (RER A, stop Nanterre-Université)
Finish : Hôpital de Nanterre

Hours 10AM-12AM

Urban circuit 2 – Nanterre pas tes rêves ! Nanterre's campus then and now

The itinerary retraces the construction of different buildings and emblematic scenes of the 1968 student and worker protests that erupted there and it offers testimonies of quotidian life at the university’s beginnings.

Departure : Campus of the university, in front of the building B (RER A, stop Nanterre-Université)
Finish : Campus of the university, in front of the building B (RER A, stop Nanterre-Université)

Hours 10AM-12AM

Urban circuit 3 – Nanterre : defend against La Défense? State planning urbanism and feuds over territories.

The new Nanterre University train station and the Terrasses of the Seine Arche operation have not yet completely erased the memory of the station and of the Folie slum, nor the social battles undertaken in the city, where the buildings testify to the dated architectural styles and the successive housing policies. These municipalities document, in a vivid fashion, the difficult building of the city, in a highly pressurized context of major state projects (La Défense, transportation infrastructures, large complexes) but also of counter-propositions borne by the municipality, organizations and inhabitants of Nanterre (Terrasses project). The resulting city, enjoying great wealth and complexity, merits a careful look, even if entire areas produced in the second half of the 20th century are in the process of an intense reshaping, essentially asking, in a radical way, the question of traces and memories.

Departure : Campus of the university, in front of the building B (RER A, stop Nanterre-Université)
Finish : Arche de la Défense (RER A, arrêt La Défense)

Hours 2:30PM-5PM

Urban circuit 4 – Sous la faculté, la plage ! From the university to the Natalys factory, passing by the Seine.

Circus, farm, student ministry, on one side, new gardens and the Parc du Chemin de l’Île on the side of the Seine, on the other, rendering more laughable a municipality still scarred by the industrial vestiges, where numerous cultural projects were hatched.

Departure: Campus of the university, in front of the building B (RER A, stop Nanterre-Université)
Finish : Natalys Factory, Nanterre

Hours 2:30PM-5PM

This circuits are free and registration is not compulsory
