At the birth of French ethnology

The site “At the birth of French ethnology. The ethnographic missions to sub-Saharan Africa (1928-1939)” is the result of the project of the same name developed within the labex in association with the Library Éric-de-Dampierre of the Laboratory of comparative ethnology and sociology, French National Library, and the Quai Branly Museum-Jacques Chirac.

The project has a double objective: elucidate the institutionalization of French ethnology and promote the ethnographic archives and collections of each partner by making public a sum of documents and analyses on the missions conducted in sub-Saharan Africa by a new generation of professional ethnologists.
